Thank you for this little treat between episodes and thank you for giving yourself the week of less stress. I'll be ready to listen when you're ready to share
Until then, where's that American Apparel gold lame snapshot? What a tease!
One: there was a think-piece making the rounds on Instagram a week or so ago, about how dressing badly is a sign of privilege? Your writing made me think of it again, how "caring" and "not caring" about fashion are both choices of some kind, even if they are passive choices. I wonder if you saw that article and what your thoughts are.
Two: oh man. Chain mail. I am a costume designer by trade and I have spent many a summer locked in the basement of some university theatre department making costumes for whichever summer Shakespeare festival, and I cannot count the number of times we've had to come up with some kind of chain mail or chain mail substitute that can be put on and often taken off quickly, that lets actors move (and sword fight) but also doesn't give anyone heat stroke. (who's idea was it to preform outside in the Midwest in July?)
I have made the choice to dress down. I would call my style “One paycheck away from homeless”. I guarantee you if I wasn’t a college educated white person I would not be able to get away with it.
Really enjoyed this essay! Makes me think of my favorite jacket, which is a Wrangler denim jacket from sometime in the early 90s (that’s my best guess anyway). It is THE specific denim jacket that I wanted, which is to say, it looks like it’s from the early 90s - it’s boxy and classic, not shrunken or fitted like later iterations. It’s also really worn in, and whoever wore it always had the sleeve cuffs rolled, which is such a specifically cool look that I can’t even stand it. So it’s kind of timeless, but also of a specific era. Both at once. And it’s a very, very cool jacket.
Love you, love the podcast. But for G-d's sake, get rid of the yellow-on-white text.* It's impossible to read & it violates the most basic accessibility requirements.
I love your mind!

I did okay at that photo game. I was within 5 years of each photo and guessed one exactly. I’m not going to press my luck.
Hi, Avery,
Love you, love the podcast. But for G-d's sake, get rid of the yellow-on-white text.* It's impossible to read & it violates the most basic accessibility requirements.
*On the substack /and/ in the newsletter.
If ever in doubt about color contrast, try this: https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/
Ironically I can't see that link because it's … yellow!
Avery, I really enjoy your posts. I loved the story about pockets. Fascinating. Thanks for your work!
