Omg, I loved this episode. I love all episodes but this one felt really applicable to me. I've been wearing prescription glasses since I was 7 and I was always jealous of people who could use sunglasses as a fashion accessory. It wasn't until I was 24 and started taking driving lessons that I got prescription sun glasses for myself. It has been a game changer. I wear it all year round because my eyes are very sensitive at 26.
I still feel weird when I wear them indoors. I have to constantly alternate. At my next appointment, I will ask for a glasses with UV protection in one. Though, I wish I had money to afford multiple styles so sunglasses can be a real fashion accessory for me, but I love the ones I have and feel cool wearing them.
Looking forward to more articles of interest. I'm so happy the show is back. Thank you!!
Hi! It’s almost guaranteed that your clear glasses meet the requirements for UV protection, especially if you get them made out of any material other than CR39 resin. (And even that basically almost always has added UV protection) Most other materials have the UV filter embedded in the lens itself.
Can’t really help you with having to constantly alternate unless you want to try a photochromic lens in your next pair.
I've worn sunglasses for the past 23 years anytime I went outside. I never really considered that the eye strain from bright light could actually be a medical concern, I just wear them because I don't like the eye strain. This was quite an enjoyable and informative listen
Loved this episode, maybe more than the corduroy episode. I love glasses full stop. They are one of the few ways a male person in a conservative environment can express a little individuality. A different pair of specs, sun, photochromic, or not can set the mood for the entire day.
The same jeans and a t-shirt take on a completely different vibe just by changing the glasses and shoes you bracket it with.
As always, I'm looking forward to your next exploration of something we wear that we simply don't think about. Right after I call the eye Dr. because it's that time of year.
I have had eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses for a while. Then I got LASIK and started investing in "name brand" sunglasses. I have a few pairs of Ray Bans and Oakleys, but my favorite pair is a vintage Mikli from the 1990s, before Luxottica got their hands on them.
It's like you made this episode for me. For more than 20 years, I wore prescription glasses with photogrey lenses, so I didn't have sunglasses. A few years ago, I had cataract surgery, and no longer need glasses, so now I have a huge wardrobe of fabulous sunglasses. Surprisingly, many of them *aren't* EssilorLuxottica Group brands, but are smaller companies who make their glasses in-house (though not the ones in my profile picture).
What a cool episode! Makes me feel a little superior for having worn sunglasses religiously for 20 years (I also wear prescription) and even more so for not having been on the Luxottica train for many years :-D
I used to get rinsed by my friends for buying Ray Bans, but as soon as my optician agreed they were a good choice to look after my eyes. I told them how wrong they all were. A great episode, thanks team!
Ray Bans are perfectly safe for your eyes and do meet UV requirements but I honestly believe that their price point far exceeds their manufacturing quality, particularly in the last 5-10 years.
Really interesting episode, thank you. When you said as an aside that bike helmets have not made the same journey from safety to stylish - I rather disagreed! The look of bike helmets has been changing and they now look way better than they used to. There has been an interesting shift towards more of a horse rider helmet look - much more chic I think, although I can't articulate why I like it better. I wonder if it's a class-based response (horse riding is posh so their helmets are chicer) but not sure I would say horse rider helmets themselves are actually stylish. Maybe in 50 years' time bike helmets will be cool...
It’s true - I hope so! You’re absolutely right that they’ve gotten better (I love my closca helmet!) but I can’t imagine they would ever get to the point where people would wear them…. indoors and not on a bike. You know what I mean? I should have been clearer about that!
When Ray-Ban was still owned by Bausch & Lomb, they were manufactured for many years where I’m from - Waterford, Ireland (where the famous Waterford Crystal is also from). Because so many people in Waterford knew someone working in the factory, any sunglasses with even the most minor imperfection (and probably some with no imperfections at all…) would find their way out of the factory and into everyone else’s hands for free! My dad must have had at least five pairs of aviators that he never had to spend a penny on (we still have some at home and the difference in quality between those manufactured then, and those for sale now, is very noticeable!)
I've worn prescription eyeglasses for most of my middle-aged life. Including sunglasses. Doctors push including the UV protection on any lens, but I get the additional shades anyway.
I got my current set of regular and sunglasses this past spring, and we went through several takes of the gradient shading on the sunglasses. They are sort of a 70s chic, huge, wire frame situation. We went darker than the sample I tried on, and I still squint when I go outside. It's annoying. But I look fantastic.
Do you carry around your sunglasses and swap them on whenever you go outside? I ask because I’m afraid this will be a hassle, since I also wear prescription glasses.
I do, which necessitates a bag large enough to hold a case if I'm walking around. I've certainly forgotten to change my glasses before entering buildings, having to go back to my car. But because these new shades are so light, I find it can leave them on without making it hard to see indoors.
One of my friends has magnetic shades for hers. She thought they'd look dumb, but of course they still look 😎
Thanks so much for the reply! I was actually thinking of tinted glasses as an option to wear 24/7, as a sort of compromise. The Auralee SS25 show inspired me to look into eyeglass cases with a neck strap too. Hadn’t thought of magnetic shades as an option!
Avery Trufelman's voice wears sunglasses

ahh, i didn't know that. I still have to squint with my regular glasses, so that's why i gave in to the sunglasses.
I have really spoiled myself, lol. My sunglasses need to be polarized with a backside anti-reflective coat or I am squinty and whiny.

hell YEAH old Mikli! Fun fact- Alan also helped with the Ray Ban wayfarer redesign

sonny rollins is just an all around style icon
So excited to give the pod a listen—I look forward to new episodes always!!

Fabbb Audrey and courreges shout out! Cant wait to listen 🖤
💛💛💛. also please do a syphilis podcast! (this bit blew my mind: https://www.lshtm.ac.uk/newsevents/events/punishing-prostitute-and-protecting-soldier-lal-bazaar-lock-hospital-and )
oh horrible! thank you so much for this I'm adding it to my long-running document of syphilis stuff
Was fully expecting a picture of Steve McQueen and/or Paul Newman and Persol sunglasses!

So there *are* gradient polarized lenses available- Zeiss and Essilor/Lux both have them in at least brown and grey.
The only drawback is that I believe they are only available in polycarbonate, which is my least favorite material for visual clarity.
If you still squint with sunglass tint, polarized lenses will probably make a big difference for you.

Having a tint all the time might be nice, but if you drive at all at night, please take that into consideration.
That’s a good point, but luckily I don’t drive at all :)
Perfect!
